VIII. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 28 to 32.

It has been thought that women are the second class in citizen, and men are the first. There is not a real equality of opportunity for men and women. Years ago, people were living in a man-dominated society. Women had to obey their husbands and fathers absolutely. Women' s place was in the kitchen and women' s work was housework. In many places, women were not even allowed to go to school. Women had no rights, even the right to choose husband for themselves. Men usually occupied high positions in society so they thought they were more intelligent than women. Men often considered women as their property. Sometimes, they were mistreated by their husbands and suffered the problem as a fate. Many parents did not even want to have daughters.

Despite the progress, there remain outdated beliefs about women' s roles, traditionally passed down from generation to generation. Men are commonly seen as the strong bodies, bread-winners in the family and key leaders in society, while women are restricted to being housewives and child bearing and care, and housework such as washing and cooking.

According to social surveys, many women in the 21st century still have to work over 12 hours a day including working in offices and doing countless household chores without any help from their husbands. In some regions, the labor of women is not recognized despite the hardships they endure to support the whole family. Moreover, women are the direct victims of family violence, especially in rural areas.

Thanks to the women' s liberation movement, nowadays women have proved that they are equal to men in every aspect. An average woman has weaker muscles than an average man but she may be as intelligent as he is. Women can do everything that men can, and women can do one thing that no man can: they produce children.

Question 28: Which was not women' s role in the former days?

A. Bearing and rearing children
B. Working in authority
C. Doing housework
D. Doing cooking

Question 29: Years ago, women were not allowed ________.

A. to stay at home with their parents
B. to do housework
C. to work in the kitchen
D. to go to school

Question 30: What did women have to suffer?

A. Enjoy their housework
B. Illiteracy
C. Good schooling
D. Choosing a husband themselves

Question 31: The outdated beliefs about women' s roles ________.

A. was forced to change after the women's liberation movement
B. have been eradicated completely
C. still exist at present.
D. disappeared soon after the women's liberation movement

Question 32: According to the text, women in the 21st century ________.

A. get help from their husbands with all housework
B. spend less than 12 hours working outside the home and doing housework
C. are still the victims of family violence in some rural areas
D. do not have to do housework any more

Read the passage and choose the best answers.

Visitors to Vietnam should pay attention to the following advice.

Socializing

Vietnamese people like to ask questions about age, marriage, salary, etc when they meet someone for the first time. For example, they may ask, ‘How old are you?’, ‘Are you married?’, ‘What do you do for a living?’, ‘Do you have any children?’ Don’t be embarrassed by these kinds of questions. This is the Vietnamese way of being friendly.

Presents

Vietnamese people always show their gratitude when receiving a gift. However, you should not be surprised if they do not open a present you had given them immediately. Opening a present in front of the gift-giver is considered to be embarrassing.

Compliments

Although Vietnamese people always appreciate compliments, they are usually modest in their reactions. For example, in response to the compliment ‘What a nice dress!’ a Vietnamese girl may say, ‘I don’t think so. It’s very old.’

The elderly

Always show the elderly respect. Bowing your head slightly to an elderly person is a sign of respect. During a meal, elderly people should be served first.

1: Which questions do Vietnamese people often ask when they meet someone for the first time?

A. questions about music
B. questions about personal life
C. questions about weather
D. questions about sports

2: Who should be served first during a meal in Vietnam?

A. the poor people
B. the young people
C. the old people
D. the rich people

3: Why don’t Vietnamese people open presents immediately?

A. Because they feel bored with opening a present.
B. Because they don’t like gift-givers.
C. Because they feel embarrassed to open a present in front of the gift-giver.
D. Because they don’t like presents.

4: How do Vietnamese people react to compliments?

A. modestly
B. happily
C. excitedly
D. sadly

5: Which of the following is NOT true?

Twenty-five students from Walling School are currently living in France. They are there for three months as part of a living-abroad project. The 16- and 17-year-old students are living with French families and attending a French school. Most of the students have taken French language classes for 3 or 4 years and are finally getting an opportunity to use their French.

Not only are students learning a new language, but they are learning about a new culture, too. Students have been particularly surprised about the French attitude towards food.

"They won't leave anything on their plate," says Vanessa Athol. "They aren't wasteful at all." Vanessa has vowed to be more careful with waste when returning to the United States.

The group's chaperone, Mrs. Smith, has been pleased with the students' acquisition of language. "Even the most timid are trying their best to speak. The students are learning a lot. I’m very impressed," she said. Mrs. Smith added that she thinks living with a French family makes a difference because students are forced to speak French. "We are all very grateful to the French families who are hosting us."

The French families are happy to have the students, as they are getting to learn about American culture. Both groups will be celebrating the exchange at a large potluck dinner at the end of the stay. There will be a slide show of memories and the students will speak about their experiences. Currently, the American students are periodically posting pictures and student essays on the Walling School website. "Living in France is an experience I'll never forget," writes student Tina Davis. "I know I'll want to eat these croissants and this Camembert for the rest of my life!"
